Garden Music Room

The finished Garden Music Room

Project Overview - Garden Music Studio & Workspace

Our customer, based on the south coast of the UK in St. Leonards-on-Sea in Hastings, East Sussex, wanted a multi-purpose room. They wanted the room to have some sound proof qualities so that they could mix music free from distractions, external noise and without bothering the neighbours. They also wanted to use this space as an additional hangout space in the garden and for occasional office space when working from home.

With enough space in their garden, designing and building a garden music room was the perfect and simplest solution.

What We Did
Here at Create A Space Ltd, we designed a garden room that allowed the client to view their picturesque and lovely garden, whilst also providing some privacy to themselves and for the surrounding houses. This client wanted to reduce costs a little by carrying out some of the work themselves.

We used acoustic glass and to reduce the sound impact on neighbours further, decided to face the building away from them. In conjunction with this, and to reduce the impact of noise on the neighbours further, the client decided to sink the building into the natural slope of the garden. This excavation was carried out before we arrived on site.

This garden building was built with structural insulated panels (SIPs) as per usual, but to give it an acoustic edge, we included an additional layer to the floor, walls and ceiling. The windows also received an acoustic upgrade too. Our sound insulation package covers both the floor walls and ceiling, meaning that they can play music and musical instruments without disturbance or disrupting the neighbours! A sound proofing test can be seen at the end of our ‘music room’ video at the end of this page.

On this project, the room we were building was in close proximity to some large trees. Large trees have large, long roots that suck up surrounding groundwater and can cause ground movement. Therefore, we decided to use concrete pads instead of screws in order to reduce the effects of ground movement in the area. Our team at Create A Space Ltd are flexible and able to implement changes according to each project - we have the best solution to any situation!

This particular project was completed over a period of 8 days, and the garden building comes complete with electricity and heating. The room was plastered and the skirting cut, but not fitted. This was so that the client could put in the finishing touches. As usual, the room was wired up to the house and certified with an NICEIC certificate by our resident sparky (electrician).

The Finished Project
The newly built garden music room is a safe and secure space that allows our customer to fully immerse themselves in their musical endeavours without street noise, disruptions or household clutter.

What they said:

Highly Recommended!

“We love our new garden studio! Steve really looked after us and helped us through the design stage, and really took the time to understand what we needed, designing a beautiful and practical space for us to enjoy.

Nothing was too much trouble, we were able to tweak the design as the process evolved and he offered practical solutions and helped us keep within our budget.

Alan and Connor did a great job with the build! They were also really accommodating and made us feel part of the whole process, asking for our input at key stages to ensure we were 100% happy with how it all came together. The craftsmanship and finish of the studio is also really great, far beyond our expectations!!”
